San Francisco Public Library (SFPL) seeks a City Librarian to replace the recently retired City Librarian, Luis Herrera. The City Librarian is appointed by the Mayor of San Francisco and reports to the Mayor and the Library Commission (appointed by the Mayor). The City Librarian will be responsible for providing exceptional leadership while advancing SFPL’s strategic priorities for an urban library system with an operating budget of $160.6 million and a team of 900 FTE’s, a Main Library and a network of 27 neighborhood branch libraries.
A collaborative library leader who has a servant leadership style with a focus on effective people management, authentic communication skills and a strong relationship builder who enjoys engaging with internal and external stakeholders to ensure excellence in the delivery of programming and service is the ideal candidate for the position. A demonstrated track record of effectively leading and balancing bold visioning, strategic planning, facilitating organizational change, solid fiscal management experience and sophisticated political navigation skills are critical.
Qualifications required include a Bachelor’s and Master’s Degree, plus six (6) years of managerial experience as a supervisor. Experience as a Library Director or Assistant Director in a large urban library system with a unionized workforce is highly desired. A complete brochure is available at
