The Las Vegas-Clark County Library District includes the City of Las Vegas and the bulk of the unincorporated urban and outlying communities in Clark County with a service population of 1.5 million of the county’s residents in an area that is over 8,000 square miles, larger than the state of Connecticut.

An independent taxing district, the Las Vegas-Clark County Library District is not a part of the city of Las Vegas or of Clark County, but is governed by a 10-member Board of Trustees, five appointed by the Las Vegas City Council and five appointed by the Clark County Board of Commissioners. The Board of Trustees appoints an Executive Director, adopts policy, approves the annual budget and ongoing expenditures, and sets an annual property tax levy.

The District employs 392 full-time and 380 part-time staff. In addition to professional librarians and other public services staff, the District employs professionals in the fields of finance, human resources, information technology, marketing, general services and development.

Thirteen urban libraries, open seven days a week, are located in the Las Vegas metropolitan area. They offer a variety of library and community-sponsored events including workshops, author visits, computer training, cultural heritage celebrations, films and storytimes. Four performing arts venues support a variety of activities from lectures to dance recitals to full-scale musical theatre. Emphasis is placed on helping the community’s young people succeed through tutoring, free homework help resources and the annual Summer Reading Program. The CALL Program (Computer Assisted Literacy in Libraries) provides ESL classes, GED preparation, adult literacy and work readiness training.

Eleven libraries serve the vast areas of Clark County outside the greater Las Vegas metro area, and are found over approximately 6,277 square miles, from the Mesquite Library near the southwest Utah border, to the Laughlin Library at the southern tip of Clark County.
