Rockford Public Library (RPL) has a challenging opportunity for a dynamic individual who has strong operational and management skills, as well as an understanding of the demands of the 21st Century customer and library service needs. Due to an impending retirement, RPL is looking for an Assistant Director who is outward looking and outcomes oriented.
RPL consists of a Main Library, four traditional branches, and a Performing Arts and Technology Center branch. RPL will be undergoing a series of physical changes, and this is an opportunity to be part of the planning and decision making in designing the services and spaces that will include a large-scale renovation project and new construction, updated collection management and circulation services and branch relocations and renovations.
Rockford, IL has a diverse population of 150,000 with affordable housing and low cost of living, yet it is within two hours of Chicago, Milwaukee and Madison WI. It is home to tech colleges, Rockford University, engineering and medical colleges, many nationally-ranked museums, three major hospitals, aerospace engineering industries, and a revitalized downtown. It is also home to 40,000 people without high school diplomas or equivalents, 25% of the population living in generational poverty, and other urban city issues.

GENERAL STATEMENT OF DUTIES: The Assistant Director is a key member of the library leadership team, reporting to the Executive Director; serves as Acting Library Director in the absence of the Executive Director; responsible for conveying and carrying out the Library’s Strategic Plan and Customer Service Policy; provides strategic and functional oversight of library public services, including all branches, public service departments and outreach functions; participates in the development and monitoring of the library’s operating and capital budgets, other administrative planning and high-level, library-wide decision making; assists in development and activation of new services, including new branch or outreach services, fundraising or promotional campaigns, facilities design, and renovation or construction; addresses customer comments/complaints and leads efforts to provide excellent customer service with a focus on effective and consistent evaluation and improvement; enforces Code of Conduct and responds to emergencies in situations that may be stressful or unpleasant; seeks out innovative and effective ways of continuously improving quality of services to customers, and maximizes efficiency; fosters leadership and mentoring to all employees; in partnership with the Executive Director, builds and fosters a success-oriented and accountable organizational environment; and performs other duties as necessary, appropriate and/or assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS: Master’s degree from an ALA-accredited college or university is required; five or more years of progressive leadership experience in a public library is highly desired; and three or more years of management/supervisory experience is preferred.
