BookOps is a fully consolidated, jointly governed and funded, shared library technical services organization that serves The New York Public Library (NYPL) and Brooklyn Public Library (BPL). Established in2013, BookOps provides a centralized management of the two systems’ selection, acquisitions, processing, and distribution of circulating materials in all formats—including digital—and new, regularly-published materials for NYPL’s general research collections. BPL and NYPL are recognized as leaders in cultural offerings, literacy, out-of-school-time services, workforce development programs, and digital literacy. BookOps is, in many ways, the backbone of these great institutions - supporting initiatives and services through quick and cost-efficient access to library materials of all kinds to patrons of each institution.
Reporting to the Chief Branch Library Officer of the NYPL, the Director will work closely with the BookOps Collaboration Committee, which consists of representatives from both libraries. The Director will be responsible for the oversight of all BookOps services and will serve as the chief strategist for improving access to collections across and between NYPL and BPL. Direct reports include the Deputy Director for Collection Management, the Deputy Director for Logistics, and the NYPL Research Technical Services Coordinator. The Director will oversee a total staff of approximately 150 employees, including both union and nonunion employees.
Priorities for the next Director will include providing strategic and operational leadership that helps its member libraries’ collections properly contribute to success in traditional and innovative efforts to expand reading, literacy, education, and technology across the diverse communities represented in Brooklyn, the Bronx, Manhattan and Staten Island. In addition to managerial experience in a complex institution, strong candidates would have insight into the future trends in trade publishing, library technology, systems to optimize discovery and delivery, and related trends.
